British Dyers Chamomile

 British Dyers Chamomile

Colours:
Warm Yellows

Ingredients:

Whole dried Anthemis Tinctoria flowers

InFO/ABOUT:

Anthemis Tinctoria, Dyers Chamomile, yields beautiful yellows from the whole dried flowers.
This Dyers Chamomiie is from a grower on Guernsey in the British Isles who uses soil-buidling permaculture techniques and a chemical-free process.

Use for bundle dyeing to create direct prints on textiles and paper, or steeped in water to create a dyepot for immersion dyeing.
The best colours are given on protein fibres such as silk and wool, rather than plant fibres.

Herbal and traditional uses:

Dyers Chamomile is edible and a tea can be made from the dried plant.

Recipe:

50% WOF - Pale pastel yellow
100% WOF - Good yellow
200% WOF - Strong yellow

Eg. 50 grams will dye 100g of fibre a good yellow.

To make a dye, add enough water to create the space required for your fibres to move around freely in.
Bring to a simmer and keep at 82 celsius for 30 mins. Strain using a sieve and cheesecloth. Add pre-wetted fibres and simmer for 60 mins or until desired depth of colour achieved. Remove from heat and cool. Rinse, wash and air dry.
Refer to my “Botanical Dyes” book for further info on dyeing instructions for cellulose/protein fibres, mordanting etc.

You can find bundle dyeing instructions in my book or the “Bundle Dyeing With Flowers” video workshop tutorial.

Fastness:

Medium strength fastness to sunlight, rubbing and washing. Colours are stronger and longer lasting in protein fibres such as silk and wool rather than cotton and linen.

Mordants/Modifiers:

Alum brightens yellows.
A small amount of calcium carbonate/ chalk added to the dye bath will also brighten colours.

Ph sensitivity:

Very sensitive
