Organic French Weld Extract

 Organic French Weld Extract

Weld is our most important native heritage yellow natural dye. This Weld is organically grown and processed in France.

Colours:
Strong, clear lemony yellow.

Ingredients:

GOTS certified organic Weld flower grown and processed in France.

Herbal and traditional uses:

Weld is one of the three primary dye colours used historically in the British Isles, along with Madder root (red) and Woad which contains indigo (blue). Weld is overdyed with madder to give a good orange and with indigo to give a clear green. These three primary dyes overdyed provide all of the secondary and tertiary dyes.

Recipe:

1-3% WOF - Light yellow
5% WOF - Intense Yellow

Put the required amount of powder in a bowl, add a few drops of water to make a paste and smooth out any lumps, before adding a few tea spoonfuls of water, to make an ink.
To make a dye, add enough water to later create the space required for your fibres to move around freely in.
Bring to a simmer and keep at 82 celsius for 40-60 mins. Strain using a sieve and cheesecloth. Add pre-wetted fibres and simmer for 60 mins or until desired depth of colour achieved.
Ref Botanical Inks book for further info on dyeing instructions for cellulose/protein fibres, mordanting etc..

Fastness:

Stabel and high lightfastness fastness.
Cold wash for longevity rather than hot.

Mordants/Modifiers:

Alum brightens yellows on animal fibres and plant fibres.
Over-dye with woad to create robin hood greens.

Ph sensitivity:

For best yellows, use a high alkaline/ hard water for best results
