A full day workshop, 10am-4.30pm, in which you will learn how to screen print with natural dyes, using a simple and ecologically conscious, paper-cut stencil technique. The day will explore natural mordants for setting colours, and plant starches for binders, along with a variety of natural dye pigments. You will experiment with different colours and techniques for using these materials for paper and cloth surfaces, and take away your own natural dye printed organic British silk cloth for making a scarf or other project, along with printed papers, which may be used for wrapping paper or art prints. You will be able to repeat this process again from what you learn in class.
What will I finish the course with?
The knowledge and skill to mix your own natural dye/plant starch printing inks for screen printing onto cloth and paper surfaces. Your own natural dye screen-printed paper art prints and length of organic British silk cloth.
What materials do I need to bring with me?
Sheets of paper and a 50x140cm length of organic British silk cloth will be provided and included in the cost of the workshop. You are also welcome to bring your own pre-scoured natural fibre cloth/garments or paper with you for experimentation on the day.
