Babs Behan, author of Botanical Inks: Plant-To-Print Dyes, Techniques and Projects, visits Make Workshop NYC, from Bristol, England for an afternoon of bundle dyeing with flowers and plant materials.
Bundle dyeing is an innovative process which by-passes the need for the dye pot, allowing for the direct transfer of plant dyes and their herbal qualities into cloth. With plant vinegars, steam and a variety of simple fold and bind techniques, a range of patterns can be achieved. Along with gaining a new skill which you can repeat again and again for yourself, using simple kitchen equipment, you will learn about intuitive herbalism, plant symbolism, natural dyeing, responsible foraging for local dyes and mordants and make your very own beautiful, natural-dye-printed silk scarf.
We will go through the preparation of cloth/garments and the mordanting processes, practice bundle dyeing and its simple steaming process using a few different folding techniques to create different pattern effects, and finishing processes. Class fee includes all supplies.
The workshop duration is 11am-1pm, with an hour at the end for drinks, mingling and book signing, finishing at 2pm.
one 2-hour workshop + 1-hour book signing // $80 (all workshop supplies included; book sold separately)
